metaphor: a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance (My hands are ice)
ex: " Corrie, we are in hell."
This is a good example because they are not really in hell they are in the worst possible situation ever.
ex: Others stayed with us a day or a week, but these seven remained, the nucleus of our happy household.
This is a good example because they are comparing there house as the center of the underground. It is not really a nucleus.
stereotype: a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group
ex: That all Jewish people look similar.
This is a good example because Corrie's brother Willem was hiding a Jew who had blue hair and blue eyes. So she did not look like a Jew because of this she did not half to go into hiding. She could walk the streets freely without anyone noticing she was a Jew.
ex: That all people who worked in the underground system were people who were bad and broke the law.
This is a good example because when a priest walks into the watch store and sees the Jewish baby he thinks that the ten Booms are now bad people. He believes they are breaking the law. When really the ten Booms understand that the situation is bad and needs to be dealt with by hiding Jews so they do not die.

This example fits in this category because she had illusion of being someones wife when she knew it could never happen. ex: Tante Bep had a illness but imagined that she really did not have a illness. So she kept on with her life, but soon reality came back and she died.

ex: When a mother and a baby come into the Ten Boom's house they take them in for a while. A priest one day comes to the watch store and sees the little Jewish baby. Corrie asked if he could keep her safe since he lived in a remote area. Yet he replied," No. Definitely no. We could lose our lives for that Jewish child! Then Mr. Ten Boom replied, " You say we could lose our lives for this child. I would consider that the greatest honor that could come to our family.
This is a good example because the baby symbolized honor to Mr. Ten Boom.

6. Repeat steps #3 and #4 for the minor character.

Corrie
The main character in The Hiding Place is Corrie. She has many Internal conflicts including when she wanted Karel but knew she could not have him. Corrie fell in love with him and imagined herself marring him, but one day she knew that they could never be. Corrie got very angry and sad inside. She loved him so and when he left she still loved him. She always knew whatever girl he married she would hate because she loved him. Her father told her to aim all that love she had to Karel to God. He said this would make her less likely to hate his wife or even him for not, or even hate herself. So corrie gave all the love she had for Karel to God. This made Corrie a better person and God helped her patch up her broken heart. Another Internal conflict would be when some men from the underground made a secret anex in her room. Corrie was a little frustrated that she had less room, but was mad at herself for being like this when she was saving lives. Corrie soon got over the fact and decided to be proud of saving lives. Another internal conflict would be when she would always be scared inside that they would be caught for hiding Jews. She never knew if someone was a spy or if the next person at the door would be a nazi. This was resolved when they started to practice in case if a nazi were to come and look for Jews. Great insights, Kate. I especially liked the inner conflict that you mentioned about having less space in her room due to the annex being built.
Corrie also experienced many external conflict when her favorite nephew, peter, decided to play the National anthem. The National anthem was illegal to sing and play when the Germans were occupying the Netherlands. She told peter it was not a good idea. Yet the German police found out and peter was taken into jail. Another external conflict would be when Corrie was trying to find hiding places for Jews but she could not send them unless they had a ration card. So to send the Jews to hiding places she made a deal with someone who stole ration cards for them. So the Jews were then able to find other hiding places. Another external conflict would be when Otto came back to the watch store when they were hiding Jews. She was shocked that he was there and had to figure out a way to push the alarm button without Otto seeing her push it. She was able to push it and the Jews were safe. Yet Otto stayed and talked to Father.
Corrie's Father
Corrie's Father experienced many internal conflicts including when his wife died. He helped soothe his sad heart with prayer and to pay more attention to his girls. Another internal conflict would be when Corrie's Father hired an apprentice. His apprentices' name was Otto. He was a fan of the Nazi's. So when The Ten Boom's were reading their bible Otto came up and called it the Jew bible. Father was somewhat hurt by this comment. Yet he ignored in and kept reading. Another internal conflict would be when Nollie got arrested for hiding Jews. Father was probably crushed when having one of his daughters going to jail.
Corrie's Father experienced many external conflicts also including when Otto his Nazi apprentice did not respect his college. They got into many fights. Otto also did not respect Corrie's Father very much either. Another external conflict involving Corrie's Father would be when his grandson was put in jail for playing the Holland National Anthem. Father also experienced an external conflict when some Nazi's believed that the Beje was the center of the underground. He had to go to the German police office and was taken onto a bus to be taken somewhere.

This movement called for strict German teaching and not parent authority. This group helped Hitler to keep the youth in order. Nazism was when young kids would go to school and learn the way of a Nazis. Hitler once said, " "My program for educating youth is hard. Weakness must be hammered away. In my castles of the Teutonic Order a youth will grow up before which the world will tremble. I want a brutal, domineering, fearless, cruel youth. Youth must be all that. It must bear pain. There must be nothing weak and gentle about it. This word relates to the story The Hiding Place because the Nazi's are a movement that everyone goes along with. Most Germans support Nazism fully. AND MANY WITHOUT A CHOICE! Scapegoat- a person or group made to bear the blame for others or to suffer in their place.
This word relates to the story the Hiding Place because The Nazi's use the Jews as their scapegoats. The Nazi's blame the Jews and then make them suffer in the concentration camps. Hitler just would blame everything on the Jews and they were the ones to suffer in their place.
